I ran this morning in the dark, as usual, only I went for a little longer than I usually do. As afternoons are hotter, I think that I enjoy the cool mornings more.
.
This morning, I ran 5 times around a mile loop in the park near my house. It was dark except for my head-light and a few lightening bugs. I ran down a dirt road and up a cement one. After awhile, I forgot where I was. My world was very narrow with occasional stumbles over rocks and occasional bugs to the face. The birds were not even awake. No cicadas or crickets or frogs.
.
Out there in the dark, I wonder why. I'm 49 years old and slow. Shouldn't I be doing something important and beneficial to society with my life? I'm going in an 8K race this weekend and hope to get an age group medal with 9 min/mile. Running really is the epitome of my life. Its not just exercise, but an essential. Logically, it makes no sense. Yet, there it is; unsatisfiable is my thirst for running. How silly I am...but I love it.
.
I replace my shoes between 250 and 300 miles. Last afternoon as I got home from work, there were two new pairs of running shoes on my front porch. I belong to a "rewards" system. I get 10% off the price of the shoes and free shipping all the time. This time, I got another 20% off the price of the second pair of shoes. If I order two more pairs before 8/31, I'll get one pair free. Near the front door if my house is a corner with piles of shoes in cubby holes, dated; spare insoles; the shoes with screws in the bottom for ice running; a coat rack with 4 running hats and two waist belts; on the ledge is a small can of pepper spray (for dogs) and a head-light.
.
This is just a tiny look into the world of a running lifer.
